New Heong Kee is a traditional Chinese restaurant located in Ampang Jaya, Selangor. Established over 50 years ago, it is known for preserving authentic cooking methods, most notably the signature Beggar Chicken. This dish is prepared by seasoning the chicken, wrapping it in lotus leaves, coating it with clay, and baking it under hot ashes to enhance flavor and tenderness. The menu also features a range of classic Chinese dishes, including boneless country fish made from fish paste encased in seaweed, stir-fried glass noodles, fried bean curd, sweet and sour pork, and several tofu specialties. Other highlights include lotus leaf rice, glutinous rice, and refreshing winter melon soup, which offers a light balance to the richer meat dishes. The atmosphere is simple and unpretentious, reflecting the restaurant’s focus on traditional flavors and cooking techniques. Due to limited daily portions, reservations and pre-orders are recommended. New Heong Kee stands out as a local institution that maintains heritage recipes and a rustic dining experience for those interested in classic Chinese cuisine prepared with time-honored methods.

Based on 493 reviews

New Heong Kee is widely recognized for its authentic and traditional Chinese cuisine, particularly its signature beggar chicken, which consistently receives praise for its flavorful, tender meat prepared using a unique clay-baking technique. The restaurant’s menu features other notable dishes such as winter melon soup, lotus rice, boneless fish, and fried tofu, which complement the main offerings and provide a balanced dining experience. While the food quality is highly appreciated, patrons frequently mention the importance of booking ahead due to limited daily servings and seating capacity. The staff are commonly described as polite and helpful, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere. Parking constraints are noted, leading to recommendations for carpooling. Overall, New Heong Kee is regarded as a worthwhile destination for those seeking traditional flavors in a modest, community-centered setting.

Food is delicious. Especially well known beggar Chicken, Soup and Lotus Rice. It is advised to give a call to the reserve table and food due to limited food served per day. Parking is limited so it is a better car pool. It is recommended and worth a visit and try. The staff are polite and helpful.

This is my 2nd time back here. Do call a day ahead to book and pre-order your dishes. Love the beggar chicken! The melon soup was alright, and the glutinous rice turned out better than expected.

A 50-year-old restaurant, the only one of its kind in the country, that employs a traditional cooking technique of coating seasoned meats with clay buried under hot ashes to extract maximum flavors. The beggar's chicken, the compulsory dish, and pig trotters were both aromatic and flavorful, while the winter melon soup and Chinese cabbage shoots nicely balanced the meaty and heaty meats. It's a very unique and interesting experience to observe the cooking process from the high-heat ashes to the dining table, with the tender meats enjoyed deliciously fresh.

Famous for beggar chicken, and it is worth the journey from the other side of town. It seemed kpg chicken, so it smaller, firm and tastier meat. It was cooked perfect that the meat comes off the bones easily. The fish was interesting, and i tried this before somewhere. It is actually fish ball paste turn into the original fish shape and skin made out seaweed. The winter melon soup is light, so i guess no MSG. The fried tofu balls are a good combo with the soup of the gravy from the chicken.

This was a hidden place off the main road and easily overlooked. We were there for a family dinner with our locals in the know, and only found it via our navigation app. The place has natural ventilation with no aircon, so it’s not ideal for those who enjoy dining at a cooler place. We were dressed comfortably and dined at night so the humidity was manageable. The place has a rustic feel about it, with the live poultry farm just adjacent the furnace where they baked their famous beggars chicken and ducks. We enjoyed most of the dishes despite the humidity. While we found the chicken slightly dry for our liking, the other dishes such as curry prawn, glutinous rice, fish cakes and braised duck were delicious.

Absolutely delicious food with flavors that truly impress! The atmosphere is cozy, warm, and incredibly comfortable — perfect for relaxing and enjoying a great meal. It feels like a hidden gem, tucked away but definitely reliable and worth discovering. Overall, a wonderful experience. Highly recommended!

Take note: 1day reservations is strictly required for this restaurant. This place is very hidden and not easy to notice beside the highway. A typical hedden gem. The famous beggar's chicken is good. Taste is very flavourful and meat is so soft as they stewed it long enough. The one I found it also surprisingly good dish is the winter melon soup. Made from the whole raw winter melon. Very refreshing soup. Overall IMHO, it is good and worth a visit. Parking can be very limited. Don't go during noon. It is not a good idea as the place will be very warm and no a/c. Take note: 1day reservations is strictly required for this restaurant.
